Question 1:
During boot-up the 64SINIT.EXE program reports that the sound card has insufficient resources ('The PnP-Device ... has too few resources').

Answer 1:
You probably set or overlooked an incorrect setting in the BIOS of your system. Because the EWS64 S is initialized by 64SINIT.EXE before Windows starts it is important that the motherboard's Plug and Play resource assignment is not disabled.

Please search your BIOS for the following entry or similar: 'PNP OS INSTALLED: (YES/NO)'. This value in the BIOS must be set to 'NO' or else only the operating system (Windows 95/98) will be manage Plug and Play resource assignments.

If this does not solve the problem, edit the last line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and insert the parameter O (as in October):

@C:\EWS64S\64SINIT.EXE F O V B GSSBK080.94B

This parameter causes the P'n'P behavior of the sound card to be disabled.

y

Question 2:
During boot-up the EWSINIT.EXE program reports the error 'Firmware is not working' or the message 'Uploading Firmware...' and the computer stops booting.

Answer 2:
First check your BIOS setting. Follow the steps listed below:
• Any interrupts to be used must be configured for use by Plug and Play devices.
• The two standard IRQs are 5 and 9. Most of the latest graphics card don't require an IRQ. So, for example, you can use the IRQ that is reserved for the graphics card or the corresponding PCI slot for the sound card and stop the graphics card from using it.
If these steps were not successful there is another possibility:
• Try to assign the synthesizer to another IRQ by starting 64SMIXER.EXE in DOS mode and setting the new IRQ or even disabling the synthesizer. If the error message continues to be displayed please call our technical support line. You can also send an e-mail message to EWS support. If you do this, please type the following in the subject line: 'firmware0001 '. [MAIL TO SUPPORT] In the e-mail message please list in detail the measures you have taken so far.

y

Question 3:
In the Device Manager there is a yellow exclamation mark beside the DigitalControl driver.

Answer 3:

Important!

Please note that Pentium II mainboards with Intel BX chipset cannot use
IRQ 9 for ISA cards anymore.

Please check the cards ressources and change them manually if IRQ 9 is used by the EWS. PCI cards still can use this IRQ so it should be easy to change the configuration.

Change the IRQ in DOS (no DOS box) by running the 64SCFG.EXE. With this you can assign the ressources for the EWS manually. The ressources of the synthesizer will be configured under 'MIDI-1'.

y

Question 4:
I cannot open any applications (Control Panel, FXPanel, MEDIAPlayer etc.).

Answer 4:
As long as the sound card is not correctly installed you cannot open any programs. Please also check
Question 3 in this FAQ.

y

Question 5:
The MIDI-2 driver only works as an output driver. How can I use the MIDI-2 for input also?

Answer 5:
For MIDI recording the interface needs an IRQ. To avoid installation problems due to insufficient resources the MIDI-2 driver is initially installed without an IRQ and can thus only be used for output. You can configure an IRQ for the MIDI-2 driver by selecting SETUP on the EWS64 S taskbar menu.

y

Question 6:
What can I do with the 'Virtual Channels'?

Answer 6:
Output ports 1 and 2 (OUT-1 and OUT-2) can be configured separately.

Therefore, you can set the different effect levels when playing back several WAVE files over the synthesizer or you can, if playing back WAVE files in the EWS' four-channel mode, use the ports separately (like 4 mono ports).

The MIDI volume and the panorama can, of course, be configured separately from WAVE audio.

If you would like more information you can download a document about 'Virtual Channels' that also discusses the ports in more detail from our webpage.

y

Question 7:
Why is there no signal on OUT-2?

Answer 7:
OUT-1 and OUT-2 are not treated equally and cannot always output the same signal. If you would like more information you can download a document about 'Virtual Channels' from our webpage.

y

Question 8:
Why is Cubasis shaky or why do the audio and MIDI tracks drift apart?

Answer 8:
The problem is that Cubasis AV uses an audio driver for synchronization.

You have probably not configured any synchronization settings and Cubasis AV-XL Edition is therefore running inaccurately.

You can change the corresponding settings as follows:
• Start Cubasis AV-XL Edition.
• Open the 'Audio' menu and then select 'Hardware-Einstellungen' (Hardware Settings).
• Click on 'Weitere Einstellungen' (Advanced settings).
• Now you have to select the audio driver Cubasis AV-XL Edition uses for playing back audio.
• Use a 'EWS64 S Synth Play' driver and as 'Sync-Referenz' (Sync reference) select the 'Sample Position' (Sample position) method. This should solve the problems for the most part. Synchronization via 'DMA-Block' (DMA block) is not as accurate as via the 'Sample Position' method.

Under certain circumstances, graphics cards can also be the cause of timing and synchronization problems. To find the source of this problem you should try using the standard Windows VGA driver and switch off any 3D functions, if available.

If this solves the problem, you should ask the manufacturer of your graphics card for new drivers.

y

Question 9:
What is the difference between a codec and a synthesizer?

Answer 9:
The codec on the EWS64 S corresponds to what a standard sound card in the upper price range offers. This means that you can sample at 16-bit resolution, playback audio files, listen to and sample CD audio, record from a microphone or attach an external device (Line In-1).

The synthesizer is the core of the EWS. Internal digital processing within the synthesizer is 20 bit. It allows analog sampling using a 18-bit converter or data to be read in directly and digitally using the S/PDIF interface (with Digital Xtension R). Additionally, the synthesizer can provide MIDI sounds and playback MOD files without taxing the processor.

You can also lay effects over everything the synthesizer produces.

y

Question 10:
When will the Ed!son instrument editor be released?

Answer 10:
Ed!son 1.0 has been released!!! :-) It is available for download from our webpage.

y

Question 11:
After increasing the number of 'Synth Play' drivers, I cannot regulate the output volume of WAV files anymore.

Answer 11:
Windows (95/98) can only manage a maximum of 8 audio drivers automatically. If you are using 8 or more synth play drivers for the synthesizer and 1 codec play driver for the codec, Windows doesn't 'know' which driver to use to playback system sounds. This is why regulating the volume of system sounds and all other audio files is a problem if they are being played back by an application that doesn't allow a special audio driver to be configured.

Because there usually is no good reason to have several audio drivers you should reduce the number of synth play drivers to 7 or less.

y

Question 12:
Do I need a DOS driver for the EWS64 S card?

Answer 12:
The EWS card does not require any special DOS software because it provides hardware compatibility. The only thing to note is that you can initialize the EWS64 S with the 64SINIT.EXE program which can also be run automatically by the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

A typical line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file would read as follows:

C:\EWS64S\64SINIT.EXE F V B /SOUNDSET/GSSBK080.94b M /SETTINGS/DOSGAME1.TTM

y

Question 13:
Why can I not start the mixer in WaveLab's recording window?

Answer 13:
This happens if you have configured the synth record driver as the WaveLab recording driver. The synthesizer does not support Windows' own mixer. Therefore, you cannot use this function. Please use the EWS Control Panel for this purpose.

y

Question 14:
I have problems with input from the microphone and with software that automatically accesses the microphone in-port.

Answer 14:
You will find some useful tips in the PRAXISTIPS.PDF file which you can obtain from our webpage. This file is really only intended for the EWS64 L/XL but it does contain a chapter (EWS und Spracherkennungssoftware) (EWS and language recognition software) that can be applied to the EWS64 S.

y

Question 15:
I am experiencing a lot of background noise.

Answer 15:
When developing the EWS series we obviously tried to keep possible influences from sources of interference to a minimum. Unfortunately it is impossible to make devices completely unsusceptible to interference in a PC environment with a power unit, hard disks, CD-ROM drives, etc.. The quality of the casing and the power unit is also an important factor.

You can try the following precautions to improve the audio quality of the EWS:

For noise:

Disconnect the CD audio cable from the EWS. If EWS audio quality improves, use a cable with better shielding.

For humming:
• First rotate your PC's power plug in the socket by 180°.
• If you have connected your EWS to a hi-fi system, disconnect devices such as a television or video recorder that may also be attached to it.

y

Question 16:
What is the latency for MIDI playback on the EWS64 S?

Answer 16:
Typical latency is < 1 ms but it definitely depends on the system's processing load and is therefore operating-system-dependent. Normally, however, it cannot exceed 10 ms. In this case, Windows 95/98 shows better results than Windows NT. The sequencer selected (16-bit or 32-bit software) is also a factor. According to experience, 16-bit sequencers, such as the Cubasis AV-XL Edition included are more accurate than 32-bit sequencers.

y

Question 17:
After installing the current version of the drivers I cannot hear anything when playing MIDI files.

Answer 17:
You have probably not loaded a sound set yet. A once-off manual installation is required:

• Select Systemsteuerung > System > Gerätemanager > TerraTec-Audiodevices > EWS64 S Synthesizer > MIDI (Control Panel > System > Device Manager > TerraTec audio devices > EWS64 S synthesizer > MIDI).
• Tick the option 'Load Startup Banks'.
• Now use the 'Load' function to load a file (e.g. gssbk320.94b) from the EWS64 'Soundset' subdirectory and reboot Windows.

y

Question 18:
My MIDI sequencer program crashes regularly (e.g. with 'General Protection Fault in MMSYSTEM.DLL')

Answer 18:
This is probably due to the virtual MIDI drivers. Make sure that the virtual MIDI drivers in any MIDI sequencer program are only configured for in OR output (see also new version of software help).

y

Question 19:
I am experiencing timing problems with audio and MIDI.

Answer 19:
You can manually set the latency of the synthesizer driver. By default this value is set to 6 ms. Please experiment a bit with this value as it can also have an effect on the timing.

y

Question 20:
When upgrading to the latest driver version I am asked for files that are not in the CD's driver directory - or - When starting any EWS applications after updating to the latest driver version I receive a message reporting that driver version 2.0 is not installed.

Answer 20:
It is possible that REMOVE64.EXE did not completely delete all entries, meaning that there were errors during the installation. The best thing to do now is the following:

• In the AUTOEXEC.BAT file delete the line containing 64SINIT.EXE.
• Delete the entire EWS64S directory. (Remember to back-up your personal mixer settings first)
• Now open Windows Explorer. There is an option called 'Ansicht' (View) on the menu. Click this option and select 'Optionen' (Options...). Enable the 'Alle Dateien anzeigen' (Show all files) option if it was disabled. Press OK to confirm.
• Now double-click on your Windows directory. You will see all the subdirectories, one of which is called INF.
• If there is a subdirectory called 'Other' in the INF directory, skip step a).
a) In the INF directory there are files that begin with OEM (oem0..., oem1..., oem2..., etc.). Delete these files.
b) In the OTHER directory you will find a file called TerraTecEWS64.INF. Delete this file.
• Now start the REMOVE64.EXE program (in the Driver\Remove directory) from your 2.x driver CD.
• When you reboot Windows 95/98 you will be given the opportunity to reinstall the drivers because the system does not recognize the sound card anymore. Follow the instructions which will then be displayed.

y

Question 21:
I hear crackly noises on a digital recording from the CD player.

Answer 21:
Make sure that you have configured the 'Digital Settings' on the Control Panel for external synchronization.

y

Question 22:
When running games that support DirectX the sound sometimes breaks up or crackles.

Answer 22:
You need driver version 2.14 or higher. These provide you with the option of selecting MusicMode or GameMode for DirectSound under 'SETTINGS' in the synthesizer driver. In this case, GameMode is of course the appropriate choice.

If you have problems with games in both DirectSound modes please use the 'EWS64 S Codec Playback' driver instead.

y

Question 23:
If I set the effect level to 0 for all the individual MIDI channels in my sequencer program the effects on all MIDI channels are still present.

Answer 23:
You must set the MIDI effect level for REVERB and CHORUS to a value smaller than 64 in the FX panel. This allows you to regulate the effect levels for the MIDI tracks independently.

y

Question 24:
I want to convert my MIDI output to a WAV file (resampling).

Answer 24:
You can do this as follows:
1. In the FX panel set the record button to the MIX position and enable the EQ/V-SPACE-Sends.
2. Now, when you record with the Wave Record driver, you can record all signals being played back via the synthesizer (MIDI, WAVE and AUDIO IN).

y

Question 25:
My ForceFeedback joystick does not receive any feedback signals.

Answer 25:
Microsoft uses MIDI lines for ForceFeedback transfers. You should configure the second MIDI interface with an IRQ (Question 5 on this FAQ) and set the 'MIDI-Settings' (MIDI settings) of the EWS64 S to 'Gameport <-> MIDI-2'.

y

Question 26:
After changing the settings in the synthesizer driver I see a yellow exclamation mark beside the DigitalControl driver.

Answer 26:
Shut down Windows, switch off the computer and wait for approx. one minute. After a reboot, the exclamation mark should have disappeared.

y

Question 27:
There is some hissing on my digital recording.

Answer 27:
First refer to
Question 21 on this FAQ.

Also, test a different digital device and other connection cables (optical or coax).

y

Question 28:
cannot use all the installed MIDI ports or not all ports are displayed.

Answer 28:
Windows 95/98 can only manage a maximum of 11 MIDI interfaces. This means that you must ensure that you don't exceed this number if you are also using other MIDI interfaces. If necessary, you can disable individual MIDI interfaces of the EWS (e.g. MIDI-2 and FM-Synthesis).

y

Question 29:
Can I attach digital devices that operate at a 48 KHz sampling rate to the 'Digital Xtension R'?

Answer 29:
No, the EWS64 S only supports the standard frequency of 44.1 KHz via the 'Digital Xtension R'. This sampling rate is normally supported by CD players, Mini Disc recorders, etc. You can connect devices that work at a different frequency but you may hear background noises on the recording or differences in speed.

y

Question 30:
As soon as I attach a joystick and move it, the EWS64 S acts strangely or I no longer hear any sound.

Answer 30:
This problem has occurred on just a few of our customer's systems. Please call our technical support line or send an e-mail message to EWS' support department. Type the following into the subject line 'joystick0001'. [MAIL AN DEN SUPPORT] In the e-mail message please list in detail the measures you have taken so far.

y

Question 31:
I have attached an external MIDI device to the EWS64 S but I cannot access it.

Answer 31:
1. It is important that you use a TerraTec MIDI adapter kit (MIDI KIT Master). The electronics in this MIDI kit are different to MIDI kits from other manufacturers.
2. Check the Gameport/MIDI routing on the EWS64 S menu in the taskbar (click right mouse button) and make sure that the routing is set to the corresponding interface (MIDI-1 or MIDI-2).
3. This error did occur with our first driver version. If you are running a driver version lower than 2.14 we recommend that you upgrade your drivers. You can always find the latest driver version on our webpage.

y

Question 32:
I have no audio output under DOS even though the EWS64 S was recognized as a Soundblaster or Soundblaster Pro card.

Answer 32:
The EWS64 S must be initialized under DOS. It is best to place the 64SINIT.EXE program in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that it gets initialized automatically every time you boot. A typical line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT will read as follows:

C:\EWS64S\64SINIT.EXE F V B GSSBK080.94B M C:\EWS64S\SETTINGS\DOSGAME1.TTM

We are assuming that you selected the 'C:\EWS64S' directory when installing. If you used a different directory, you must change the path accordingly.

y

Question 33:
I have installed Windows 98. The EWS64 S task menu no longer displays correctly. The options extend outside the display area and are unrecognizable.

Answer 33:
You are probably still working with an older version of the Control Panel. The Control Panel included with the latest EWS64 S applications no longer causes this distortion of the display.

y

Question 34:
When I try to modify the EWS64 S resources in the Device Manager, a window with the title '(No modifications permitted' ) and the text 'This resource setting may not be modified' is displayed. Is it possible to change the resources anyway?

Answer 34:
The EWS64 S resources may not be modified in the Device Manager. The resources can be modified using the 64SMIXER.EXE program under DOS (not a DOS window). This program can also be started directly from the EWS64 S context menu (right mouse button on taskbar mixer symbol). Just select the 'SETUP' option.
Take note of free and reserved resources (IRQs, DMA channels and I/O ports) before making any changes.

y

Question 35:
I have upgraded to the latest driver version but the previous firmware version is still displayed.

Answer 35:
The latest firmware (the EWS operating system) is always included with the latest driver version. The file is called EWS64_OS.BIN. This file is automatically copied to the main Windows directory.

If, after upgrading your drivers, the latest version number is not displayed initialize the EWS using the 64SINIT.EXE initialization program before Windows loads. This will cause the firmware version that is in the same directory (normally C:\EWS64S) to be loaded into the EWS. Also, copy the EWS64_OS.BIN to your EWS installation directory. You should also be sure to perform a cold boot after upgrading the drivers.

You can see what driver and firmware version are being used in the Device Manager. Just select the synthesizer under 'TerraTec Audio Devices' and click on 'Eigenschaften' (Properties). Then select the 'Information' tab.

y

Question 36:
After installing a new driver version I can play audio, MIDI files and CDs but I cannot hear anything.

Answer 36:
You should have a file called UNMUTE.EXE in your Windows directory. Just run this file under Windows. Once this file has been run, sounds should be audible again.

y

Question 37:
Audio files are played back faster or slower than I recorded them.

Answer 37:
Please check the pitch settings in the 'Virtual Channels'. A double-click on the pitch fader will cause it to be centered.

y

Question 38:
When recording to harddisk the recording stops after only a few tracks or the recorded tracks are played back with crackly noises.

Answer 38:
In this instance you should increase the latency of the synthesizer driver in the Device Manager. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend a specific value because this setting is system and program-dependent.

y

Question 39:
In the Device Manager under 'TerraTec Audio Devices' in the 'Properties' of the 'TerraTec EWS64S Synthesizer' on the 'Information' tab, the serial number of my card is shown as 'FFFFFFFF'. The 64SINIT.EXE program shows the same serial number. Is my hardware faulty?

Answer 39:
No, this is just an internal serial number. This serial number can also change if you change the resources on the card or reburn the card's EEPROM.

y

Question 40:
If I attempt to edit the playing list in the EWS MediaPlayer, the drives are briefly accessed and then a 'Runtime Error' error message is displayed.

Answer 40:
This error has occurred on systems on which the CD-ROM drive was not correctly installed under Windows and thus was not correctly listed in the Device Manager. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions enclosed with the CD-ROM drive.

y

Question 41:
As soon as I start viewing videos under Windows 98 a blue screen with the error message 'Exception Error 0E ... VPICD.VXD' is displayed.

Answer 41:
This error appears to be caused by graphics card drivers. So far, this error has only occurred on systems with Matrox G200-based AGP cards. At present, the problem can only be solved by changing the DirectSound settings of the synthesizer listed in the Device Manager. Set the DirectSound mode to Game Mode.

y

Question 42:
Under Windows 95/98 the help file always displays the same error message: '1024 the helpfile is corrupt, please contact the manufacturer'.

Answer 42:
This error message is displayed on some systems. You can, however, ignore the message because the help system's functionality is not diminished at all.

y

Question 43:
I have heard that it is possible to switch off the codec on the EWS64 L/XL if it is not needed or if one wants to use a different sound card with a codec. Does this also work on the EWS64 S?

Answer 43:
No, the EWS64 S codec cannot be disabled.

y

Question 44:
When I play back an instrument created with ED!SON and the EWS is in 4-channel mode, I hear the instrument also on OUT-2 although the instrument should only be heard on OUT-1.

Answer 44:
Please set the 'FX sends' for the instrument in ED!SON to 0. Please note that this settings does not allow to hear effect for this instrument anymore, even if the EWS is running in fx mode again.

y

Question 45:

What is the maximum file size for audio files to be used in ED!SON?

Answer 45:
You will find the maximum file size in the following chart. Please note that the samping frequency has no influence on the size of the file, but on the length. A 16bit mono sample with a sampling frequency of 44100Hz can be have a length of up to 5.94 seconds, a 16bit mono samples with 11025Hz a maximum length of 23.77 seconds.

8 Bit Mono 256 kB
8 Bit Stereo 512 kB
16 Bit Mono 512 kB
16 Bit Stereo 1024 kB

y

Question 46:
Files which are played back by the Active Movie- or the Quicktime Movie-player under Windows 98 are too fast.

Answer 46:
The only possibility to solve this problem is to change the DirectSound mode in the device manager.

1. Open the device manager and the 'TerraTec Audio Devices' folder.
2. Mark the 'TerraTec EWS64S Synthesizer' and click on 'Properties'.
3. Open the 'Settings' tab and change the DirectSound setting into 'Game mode (high performance)'.
4. Click 'OK' to accept this setting.

Question 50:
I have installed Cubase VST 3.6. When I choose the "EWS64 S Synth Play" preset, the card is muted though I can see the playback in the monitors.

Answer 50:
This problem is caused by some strange settings in VST's EWS presets. The input for the driver is activated and the card is set to half duplex. Turn off the input of the driver and set the card to "full duplex". Also you shoud set the synchronization to "Sampleposition output" to improve the audio-/MIDI synchronization.

Question 51:
How can I use soundsets, that I have created with the Ed!son-Beta version (e.g. version 1.63), in my MIDI arrangements ?
Answer 51:
You can do this by using the Ed!son instrument editor as Setmanager. If you load a soundset into Ed!son so it will be automatically
loaded in the memory from your EWS. So you can use the MIDI PLAY device for playing the soundset.
