Question 1:

During boot-up the EWSINIT.EXE program reports that the sound card has insufficient resources ('The PnP-
Device ... has too few resources').

Answer 1:

You probably set or overlooked an incorrect setting in the BIOS of your system. Because the EWS has to be
initialized before Windows, it is important that the motherboard's Plug and Play function should not be
disabled.

Look in your BIOS for an option called 'PNP OS INSTALLED (YES/NO)' or similar. This BIOS value must be
set to 'NO' otherwise only the operating system will manage the Plug and Play function.

Question 2:

During boot-up the EWSINIT.EXE program reports the error '1st PCF8574 Write Failed'.

Answer 2:

Unfortunately, we must request you to contact our customer services. You can either do this by telephone
during our usual technical support hours or directly by e-mail.

y

Question 3:

During boot-up the EWSINIT.EXE program reports the error 'Firmware is not working' or the message
'Uploading Firmware ...' and the computer stops booting.

Answer 3:

First check your BIOS settings. Follow the steps listed below:

If these steps were not successful there is another possibility:

If the error message continues to be displayed please call our technical support line.

y

Question 4:

During boot-up the EWSINIT.EXE program reports the error 'Bootstrap does not run correctly!'

Answer 4:

If this error occurs you probably have faulty hardware.
Please run the EWS64NEU.EXE program in the EWS64's EEPROM subdirectory under DOS. If the error
message is displayed again after rebooting you should send us your audio system for repair.

y

Question 5:

In the Device Manager there is an exclamation mark beside the synthesizer driver.

Answer 5:

The exclamation mark in the Device Manager beside the EWS synthesizer usually indicates that the EWS did
not initialize correctly (before Windows booted). Please check if the EWSINIT.EXE initialization program (run
by the AUTOEXEC.BAT file) displays an error message (see above).

y

Question 6:

In the Device Manager there is an exclamation mark beside the DigitalControl driver.

Answer 6:

Try assigning the synthesizer to a different IRQ or disable it by starting its 'SETUP' routine in the Control Panel.

y

Question 7:

I cannot open any applications (Control Panel, FXPanel, MEDIAPlayer etc.).

Answer 7:

As long as the sound card is not correctly installed you cannot open any programs. Please also check
Questions 5 and 6 in this FAQ.

y

Question 8:

How can I enable MIDI2?

Answer 8:

Please adhere to the following steps to enable the interface:

  1. Check if any of the following IRQs are available on your system: 5, 7, 9, 11, 12 or 15
  2. Check if any of the following I/O addresses are available on your system: 300, 310, 320 ,330, 340, 350,
    360, 370 or 380

If you have no free resources you have the following possibilities:
    a) Reconfigure other installed hardware to make the corresponding resources available.
    b) Enable the MIDI interface without an IRQ (OFF) and use the interface only as MIDI-OUT.
  3. Open the EWS64 Control Panel, click on 'Setup' and enter the resources noted in steps 1 + 2.
  4. Click OK to activate the changes.

Please note that you may need to have the driver disk handy when rebooting.

y

Question 9:

What can I do with the 'Virtual Channels'?

Answer 9:

Output ports 1 and 2 (OUT-1 and OUT-2) can be configured separately.

Therefore, you can set the different effect levels when playing back several WAVE files over the synthesizer
or, if playing back WAVE files in the EWS' four-channel mode, you can use the ports separately (like 4 mono
ports). The MIDI volume and the panorama can, of course, be configured separately from WAVE audio.

If you would like more information, download the file about Virtual Channels which also discusses these
settings in more detail from our webpage.
(For Praxistips-DOC and VirtualChannels-DOC see BBS and http://www.terratec.de or on the driver CD
version 2.0 or higher)

y

Question 10:

Why is there no signal on OUT-2?

Answer 10:

OUT-1 and OUT-2 are not equal and cannot always output the same signal.

If you would like more information you can download the file about Virtual Channels which also discusses
the output ports in more detail from our webpage.
(For Praxistips-DOC and VirtualChannels-DOC see BBS and http://www.terratec.de or on the driver CD
version 2.0 or higher)

y

Question 11:

Why is Cubasis shaky or why do the audio and MIDI tracks drift apart?

Answer 11:

The problem is that Cubasis AV uses an audio driver for synchronization.

You have probably not configured any synchronization settings and Cubasis AV-XL Edition is therefore
running inaccurately.

You can change the corresponding settings as follows:

This should solve the problems for the most part. Synchronization via 'DMA-Block' (DMA block) is not as
accurate as via the 'Sample Position' (Sample position) method.

Under certain circumstances graphics cards can also be the cause of timing and synchronization problems.
To find the source of this problem you should try using the standard Windows VGA driver and switch off any
3D functions, if available.

If this solves the problem, you should ask the manufacturer of your graphics card for new drivers.

y

Question 12:

What is the difference between a codec and a synthesizer?

Answer 12:

The codec on the EWS64 XL corresponds to what a standard sound card in the upper price range offers. This
means that you can sample at 16-bit resolution, playback audio files, listen to and sample CD audio, record
from a microphone or attach an external device (Line In-1).

The synthesizer is the core of the EWS. Internal digital processing within the synthesizer is 20 bit. It allows
analog sampling using a n18-bit converter or data to be read in directly and digitally using the S/PDIF
interface (with Digital Xtension R). Additionally, the synthesizer can provide MIDI sounds and playback
MOD files without taxing the processor.

You can also lay effects over everything the synthesizer produces.

y

Question 13:

When will the Ed!son instrument editor be released?

Answer 13:

The Ed!son instrument editor 1.0 has been released!!! :-)
You will find it on the latest driver CD or on our webpage.

y

Question 14:

When will the Windows NT driver be released?

Answer 14:

Programming work for this is in full swing, however, we cannot make any predictions for a release date.
Also, Windows NT is proving most uncooperative with regard to MIDI. Timing is very inaccurate. If you
require MIDI support for your work we recommend that you use Windows 95/98.

There is, however, the somewhat primitive option of using a small part of the sound card (the codec) under
NT. For this you will require the Windows NT driver for the Maestro 32/96 sound system which you will find
on our webpage (http://www.terratec.de). Install the driver as described in the LIESMICH (README) file.
However, we cannot provide support for this combination.

y

Question 15:

I cannot regulate the wave volume.

Answer 15:

This is partly our fault, partly Microsoft's fault.

Windows (95/98) can only manage a maximum of 8 audio drivers automatically. If you are using 8 or more
synth play drivers for the synthesizer and 1 codec play driver for the codec, Windows doesn't 'know' which
driver to use to playback system sounds. This is why regulating the volume of system sounds and all other
audio files is a problem if they are being played back by an application that doesn't allow a special audio
driver to be configured.

You can force Windows to playback audio files via the codec in order to be able to regulate the volume with
the WAVE regulator on the EWS Control Panel.

1. Open the Device Manager (Start/Einstellungen/Systemsteuerung/System) (Start/Settings/Control
Panel/System).
2. Mark the 'TerraTec EWS64 XL Synthesizer' entry and click on 'Eigenschaften' (Properties).
3. Select the 'Settings' tab.
4. Reduce the number of audio drivers ('number of wave devices') to 7 and click on OK.
5. Close the Device Manager and open Multimedia
(Start/Einstellungen/Systemsteuerung/Multimedia)(Start/Settings/Control Panel/Multimedia).
6. On the 'Audio' tab select the 'EWSCodec-Play' driver as the preferred device.
7. Tick the 'Nur bevorzugte Geräte verwenden' (Use preferred devices only) check box.
Now all Windows sounds will be played back using the codec driver and can be regulated using the Wave
regulator in the Control Center.

y

Question 16:

When starting Cubasis AV I receive a protection fault in ADEVICE.DLL.

Answer 16:

In the ADEVICE.INI file in your Cubasis AV directory in the [Audio_Device] section change the line
'mmx_support=1' to 'mmx_support=0'.

After the next reboot, the Cubasis system will start without the error message.

y

Question 17:

Do I need a DOS driver for the card?

Answer 17:

The EWS card does not require any special DOS software because it provides hardware compatibility.

In future we will provide you with a program that will allow you to load a sound bank into the EWS without
running the EWSINIT.EXE initialization program.

y

Question 18:

What signal-to-noise ratio does the EWS 64 XL have?

Answer 18:

The signal-to-noise ratio is -94dB at 2 Volts.

y

Question 19:

How does the EWS64 work together with Cubase VST?

Answer 19:

The situation for VST and the EWS64 XL is as follows:

Until we can provide the corresponding ASIO drivers (no release date has been set yet), VST will treat the
EWS64 XL as a standard sound card.

y

Question 20:

Why can I not start the mixer in WaveLab's recording window?

Answer 20:

Unfortunately, our synthesizer does not support Windows' own mixer. Therefore, you cannot use this
function. Please use our Control Panel for this purpose.

y

Question 21:

I have problems with input from the microphone.

Answer 21:

Unfortunately, recording from a microphone is quite complicated due to a problem with the driver. Because
of a discrepancy in the driver it is not always possible to detect whether the microphone AGC is activated or
not. This means that it may be activated already at startup although the corresponding 'LED' is not on.

For best quality microphone recordings we recommend that you leave the microphone's BOOST function off
and to switch the AGC on and off again immediately.

If you wish to use language recognition software you will find useful tips in the PRAXISTIPS.PDF file which
you will find on our webpage or on your driver CD.

y

Question 22:

I am experiencing a lot of background noise.

Answer 22:

When developing the EWS series we obviously tried to keep possible influences from sources of
interference to a minimum. Unfortunately, it is impossible to make devices completely unsusceptible to
interference in a PC environment with a power unit, hard disks, CD-ROM drives, etc. The quality of the
casing and the power unit is also an important factor.

You can try taking the following precautions to improve the audio quality of the EWS:

For noise:

y

Question 23:

What is the latency for MIDI playback on the EWS64 L/XL?

Answer 23:

Typical latency is < 1 ms but it definitely depends on the system's processing load and therefore is
operating system dependent. Normally, however, it cannot exceed 10 ms.
In this instance, Windows 95/98 shows better results than Windows NT.

The sequencer selected (16-bit or 32-bit software) is also a factor. According to experience, 16-bit
sequencers such as the Cubasis AV-XL Edition (included) are more accurate than 32-bit sequencers.

y

Question 24:

The Virtual Channels and many settings on the FX and Control Panel cannot be saved.

Answer 24:

Don't save the mixer setting as a MIX file but as a TTM file.

y

Question 25:

When restarting Windows 95/98 after installing the drivers, the error message 'Beim Initialisieren des
Geräts IOS Windows-Schutzfehler' (Windows General Protection Fault when initializing the IOS device) is
displayed.

Answer 25:

You can solve this problem by renaming the RMM.PDR file in the \Windows\System\IOSUBSYS subdirectory
to RMM.BAK. You can use Windows Explorer to do this. The Windows Protection Fault will generally no
longer occur.

y

Question 26:

After installing version 2.x of the drivers I cannot hear anything when playing MIDI files.

Answer 26:

In contrast to driver version 1.3, this version does not automatically load a sound set. A once-off manual
installation is required:

y

Question 27:

My sequencer program crashes regularly (e.g. with 'General Protection Fault in MMSYSTEM.DLL')

Answer 27:

This is probably due to the virtual MIDI drivers. Make sure that the virtual MIDI drivers in the MIDI
sequencer program are only configured for in- OR output (see also new version of software help).

y

Question 28:

When loading MIX files in the Control Panel, the In-2 fader is not restored to the saved setting.

Answer 28:

Save the same mixer setting again as a TTM file.

y

Question 29:

I am experiencing timing problems with audio and MIDI.

Answer 29:

As of driver version 2.0 you can manually set the latency of the synthesizer driver.
Please experiment a bit with this value as it can also have an effect on the timing.

y

Question 30:

When upgrading to the latest driver version I am asked for files that are not in the CD's driver directory - or -
When starting any EWS applications after updating to the latest driver version I receive a message reporting
that driver version 2.0 is not installed.

Answer 30:

It is possible that REMOVE64.EXE did not completely delete all entries, meaning that there were errors
during the installation.

The best thing to do now is the following:

y

Question 31:

I hear crackly noises on my digital recording from DAT.

Answer 31:

Make sure that the sampling frequency configured at the top right of the Control Panel corresponds to the
DAT frequency, etc. and that synchronization is set to EXTERN (EXTERNAL) e.g. < EXT. 44.1kHz >

y

Question 32:

There is a hissing signal on my digital recording.

Answer 32:

First refer to Question 21 on this FAQ.

Alternatively:

y

Question 33:

After installing driver version 2.x I hear no sound although I can see that sound files are being played back.

Answer 33:

Please download the latest drivers from our webpage (http://www.terratec.de) or from our BBS. If this is
not possible please proceed as follows:

  1. First reinstall an older 2.x driver version (e.g. 2.0 or 2.03)
  2. Shutdown Windows and restart in MS-DOS mode (not a DOS window!)
  3. Now copy the 2.x files EWSAUDIO.DRV, EWSAUDIO.VXD and EWS64CFG.DLL to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory and the EWS64_OS.BIN file to your WINDOWS directory.
  4. Switch off the computer, wait a few seconds and start Windows 95/98.

y

Question 34:

When running games that support DirectX the sound sometimes breaks up or crackles.

Answer 34:

You need driver version 2.14 or higher. These provide you with the option of selecting MusicMode or
GameMode for DirectSound under 'SETTINGS' in the synthesizer driver. In this case, GameMode is of course
the appropriate choice.

y

Question 35:

If I set the effect level to 0 for all the individual MIDI tracks in my sequencer program, the effects of all MIDI
sounds are still present.

Answer 35:

You must set the MIDI effect level for REVERB and CHORUS to 63. This gives you full control of the effect
levels for the MIDI tracks in your sequencer program.

y

Question 36:

I want to convert my MIDI output to a WAV file (resampling).

Answer 36:

You can do this as follows:

  1. In the FX panel set the record button to the MIX position and enable the EQ/V-SPACE-Sends.
  2. Now, when you record with the Wave Record driver, you can record all signals being played back via the
synthesizer (MIDI, WAVE and AUDIO IN).

y

Question 37:

My ForceFeedback joystick does not receive any feedback signals.

Answer 37:

This is a problem that can occur when using the EWS64-XL. There are two ways of solving this problem:

  1. Because the Forcefeedback signals run over MIDI cables, the front module must be disconnected.
Otherwise, the MIDI signals will only be sent to the front module.
  2. Microsoft provides a special adapter with which the ForceFeedback signals can be sent over the serial interface.

y

Question 38:

After changing the settings in the synthesizer driver I see an exclamation mark beside the DigitalControl driver.

Answer 38:

Shutdown Windows, switch off the computer and wait for approx. one minute. After the next reboot, the
exclamation mark should have disappeared.

y

Question 39:

I cannot use all the MIDI ports.

Answer 39:

Windows 95/98 can only manage a maximum of 11 MIDI interfaces. This means that you must ensure that
you don't exceed this number if you are also using other MIDI interfaces. If necessary, you can disable
individual MIDI interfaces of the EWS (e.g. MIDI-2 and FM-Synthesis).

y

Question 40:

I have upgraded to driver version 2.x but the firmware is still the old one (e.g. 2.02), not 2.13.

Answer 40:

The EWSINIT initialization program is loading an old firmware version from the EWS64 directory under DOS.
To update this file simply copy the EWS64_OS.BIN file from your Windows directory to your EWS64
directory.

y

Question 41:

After installing a new driver version I can play audio, MIDI files and CD audio files but I cannot hear anything.

Answer 41:

You should have a file called UNMUTE.EXE in your Windows directory. Once this file has been run
everything should be OK again.

y

Question 42:

As of driver version I have an additional MIDI 1 driver as well as the MIDI play driver in my sequencer
program, however, this extra driver is not listed under Windows 95/98 'Multimedia'.

Answer 42:

Unfortunately, this is the way it is. The reason for this is that Windows 95/98 only presents associations
with logical devices. Windows is not yet designed to recognize that a logical device in a device category can
provide several devices.

y

Question 43:

My audio files are played back faster or slower than I recorded them.

Answer 43:

Check if the pitch faders for all wave devices in the 'Virtual Channels' are centered.

y

Question 44:

After installing the drivers there is an exclamation mark beside the DigitalControl driver.

Answer 44:

If you are using a motherboard with the BX chipset you cannot use IRQ 9 for ISA cards and thus the EWS 64.
Assign a different available IRQ to the synthesizer.

y

Question 45:

When recording to harddisk the recording stops after only a few tracks or the recorded tracks are played
back with crackly noises.

Answer 45:

In this instance you should increase the latency of the synthesizer driver in the Device Manager.
Unfortunately, we cannot recommend a specific value, because this setting is system-dependent.

y

Question 46:

The MIDI-2 driver only works as an output driver. How can I use the MIDI-2 for input also?

Answer 46:

For MIDI recording the interface needs an IRQ. To avoid installation problems due to insufficient resources the MIDI-2 driver is initially installed without an IRQ and can thus only be used for output. You can configure an IRQ for the MIDI-2 driver by selecting SETUP in the EWS64 ControlPanel.

y

Question 47:

I have no audio output under DOS even though the EWS64 was recognized as a Soundblaster or Soundblaster Pro card.

Answer 47:

The EWS64 must be initialized under DOS. It is best to place the EWSINIT.EXE program in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that it gets initialized automatically every time you boot. A typical line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT will read as follows:

C:\EWS64\EWSINIT.EXE F V B GSSBK080.94B M C:\EWS64\SETTINGS\DEFAULT.MIX

We are assuming that you selected the 'C:\EWS64' directory when installing. If you used a different directory, you must change the path accordingly.

y

Question 48:

When I try to modify the EWS64 resources in the Device Manager, a window with the title '(No modifications permitted' ) and the text 'This resource setting may not be modified' is displayed. Is it possible to change the resources anyway?

Answer 48:

The EWS64 resources may not be modified in the Device Manager. The resources can be modified using the EWSMIXER.EXE program under DOS (not a DOS window). This program can also be started directly from the EWS64 ControlPanel. Just select the 'SETUP' button.
Take note of free and reserved resources (IRQs, DMA channels and I/O ports) before making any changes.

y

Question 49:

In the Device Manager under 'TerraTec Audio Devices' in the 'Properties' of the 'TerraTec EWS64 Synthesizer' on the 'Information' tab, the serial number of my card is shown as 'FFFFFFFF'. The EWSINIT.EXE program shows the same serial number. Is my hardware faulty?

Answer 49:

No, this is just an internal serial number. This serial number can also change if you change the resources on the card or reburn the card's EEPROM.

y

Question 50:

If I attempt to edit the playing list in the EWS MediaPlayer, the drives are briefly accessed and then a 'Runtime Error' error message is displayed.

Answer 50:

This error has occurred on systems on which the CD-ROM drive was not correctly installed under Windows and thus was not correctly listed in the Device Manager. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions enclosed with the CD-ROM drive.

y

Question 51:

As soon as I start viewing videos under Windows 98 a blue screen with the error message 'Exception Error 0E ... VPICD.VXD' is displayed.

Answer 51:

This error appears to be caused by graphics card drivers. So far, this error has only occurred on systems with Matrox G200-based AGP cards. At present, the problem can only be solved by changing the DirectSound settings of the synthesizer listed in the Device Manager. Set the DirectSound mode to Game Mode.

Answer 55:

The only possibility to solve this problem is to change the DirectSound mode in the device manager.

1. Open the device manager and the 'TerraTec Audio Devices' folder.
2. Mark the 'TerraTec EWS64 Synthesizer' and click on 'Properties'.
3. Open the 'Settings' tab and change the DirectSound setting into 'Game mode (high performance)'.
4. Click 'OK' to accept this setting.

During changing the EWS settings in the device manager no EWS application (Control Panel, FX panel etc.) should be running.

Question 59:

I have installed Cubase VST 3.6. When I choose an EWS64 Wave Play preset, the card is to be muted though I see the peaks in the monitors.

Answer 59:

This problem is caused by some strange settings in VST's EWS presets. The input for the driver is activated and the card is set to half duplex. Turn off the input of the driver and set the card to "full duplex". Also you shoud set the synchronization to "Sampleposition output" to improve the audio-/MIDI synchronization.
